The Ekiti State Police Command has summoned authorities of Crown Polytechnic,
Ado-Ekiti on the involvement of students of the institution in rape and other
criminal activities in the polytechnic.
Babayemi said the students of the polytechnic, which is located along Ado-Ilawe Ekiti road, were notorious for raping and defiling of young girls, saying some of the students, who were expelled for the same offence were not reported to any police station.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mr. Victor
Babayemi, who disclosed this to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, said the invitation
was at the instance of the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, who
expressed displeasure with the rise in crime wave in the institution.
The command had on Wednesday paraded seven rape suspects, where four of the
suspects were alleged to be students of the institution.
Babayemi said Wakama had expressed disappointment at the way the
institution was allegedly hoarding information about rape incidents being
committed by students of the institution.
According to him, the polytechnic’s delegation was led by its Rector, Mr.
Aderemi Oke and the Registrar, Mr. David Olukowade, and other top management of
the institution were represented at the meeting.
Addressing journalists on the outcome of the meeting, the command’s
spokesman said part of the issues discussed was how the two institutions could
collaborate to rid the polytechnic of crimes that had become so endemic.
Babayemi said the commissioner of police had issued a warning to the
institution’s management against hoarding information about rape
incidents, stressing that such unwholesome acts would no longer be
tolerated.
He said the commissioner also told the management to put mechanism in place
to curtail crimes in the polytechnic.
He said: “The Commissioner of Police had spoken to them and they did
promise that they will do everything within their powers to stop
criminal behaviour among the students. We also make it a point of duty for
them to collaborate with us on how to stop criminality in the institution and
report cases of crimes to the police for proper investigation.”
Babayemi said the students of the polytechnic, which is located along Ado-Ilawe Ekiti road, were notorious for raping and defiling of young girls, saying some of the students, who were expelled for the same offence were not reported to any police station.
