A bra will be worn next to your skin, so it's essential that it's free of dirt, sweat and grime. Be sure to wash it often so perspiration and body oils don't linger.
By following the recommended care instructions, you can prolong the life of your bras! All bras should be hand washed, especially underwire bras. If the underwire comes out, not only will the bra be ruined, but the wire could also cause severe damage to your washing machine.
Hand-wash
To keep delicate fabrics of lingerie items looking pretty, keep them out of the washing machine. Fill a deep sink with cold water and gentle detergent (shampoo or hand soap should not be used), then soak. Rub the bra (or the lingerie item) gently with hand and make sure that you use enough water to get the sweat out. If the bra is made of silk, lace or satin, exercise extra caution when rubbing so as not to pull the threads out
Things You'll Need
- Mild Detergent
- Lingerie bag
Step 2: Place the bra in the water. Allow them to soak for at least five minutes.
Step 3: Gently rub the material of the bra together to loosen trapped dirty.
Step 4: Hand-wash a bra to prolong its life. Use cool water and a gentle soap made for delicate fabrics.
Step 5: Drain the water from the sink. Rinse out the bra under cool running water.
Step 6: Air-dry the bra after washing.
Machine washing
Step (A): Place the bra in a lingerie bag if you machine-wash it.
Step (B): Wash the bra in cool water on the delicate cycle, using a mild detergent.
Step (C): Air-dry the bra after washing.
How to Remove Colour Stains From a Bra
Colour Stains can ruin a bra's appearance, especially if the stains are extremely discernable on the bra. Promptly treat stains before they permeate fabric fibres and become increasingly strenuous to remove. If neglected, colour can permanently stain a bra.
Things You\\ll Need
- Clean bucket
- Water
- Packaged powdered colour remover
- Wooden spoon
- Laundry soap
- Wash machine
Step(I): Fill a clean bucket or sink with 4 gallons of the warmest water safe for the bra. Dissolve a packaged powdered colour remover in the water. Thoroughly mix the colour remover until the power completely dissolves in the water.
Step (II): Submerge the white or colour fast bra in the solution. Soak the bra in the solution for the time frame advised by the colour remover manufacturer. Occasionally stir the bra in the solution using a wooden spoon.
Step (III): Rinse the bra with warm water to wash out the solution.
Step (IV): Inspect the bra for remaining dye stains. If stains remain, continue soaking the bra in the solution according to the colour remover manufacturer\\s instructions.
Step (V): Launder the bra with laundry soap in a wash machine according to the directions listed on the bra's care tag.
Line dry
Never, ever put bras in the dryer. Instead, after washing, clip them to a clothesline or hang them on a drying rack. We have seen most women do not follow this advice and the bras and most lingerie items get dumped in the dryer without even thinking about it. Keep your lingerie away from sunlight too to avoid fading. Avoid shrinkage and prolong life by hanging bras to air-dry instead of machine-drying them.
Storing lingerie
It is good to have a separate lingerie chest, if possible. Otherwise, you must make room for lingerie items in separate drawers. Depending upon your lingerie collection, you might want to organize them by type (e.g. all bras in one drawer and all panties in another, and so on) or you can put all the matching sets together if you are the type that is a big fan of matching lingerie items.
Note:
Many companies advise that you wash a bra before wearing it the first time.
If you are nursing, breast milk generally does not stain. If it does, simply pre-treat the nursing bra with an enzyme-containing product such as Biz, which will dissolve the protein in the milk stain. Then wash as usual.
Machine-washing underwire bras can result in the wire coming out and lodging in your washing machine. If you machine-wash these bras, make sure they\\re inside a lingerie bag.
Using harsh detergents on a bra is not only bad for the bra - it may cause irritation around your nipples or skin.
For best results, do not put a bra in the dryer.
